Before my partner Marc Andreessen and his friends at the University of Illinois invented the browser in 1993, most people thought only scientists and researchers would use the Internet. His co-founder, Eric, was the best young executive that we had at Opsware and is building Rockmelt into a great company and a great place to work.

We were introduced in the spring of 1993 by Jim Galvin, CEO of Allcom, which had just been acquired by Len’s company Sage Alerting Systems. It took a while for me and my partner Dave Jilk to decide to do it, but we closed the sale in November 1993. At Mobius, we invested in Vytek, another company Len co-founded.

It was pretty fun to sit on stage recently with Techstars co-founder David Brown to tell our story in front of the newest class of Techstars founders in Boulder. I’ve seen that pattern play itself back, and in some cases we’ve been able to double exit values for our founders.

I learned this in 1993 when my first company was acquired by Len Fassler and Jerry Poch, two of the absolute master deal makers I’ve ever worked with. It’s not Microsoft or Google or Amazon that you’re looking to partner with, it’s Mary or Matt or Lindsay. Companies don’t make deals with other companies.

In my first real company, Feld Technologies, there were two founders – me and Dave Jilk. But we stayed after it and built a successful company that was consistently profitable and acquired by a public company in 1993 for a few million dollars. I reported to the two co-chairman and we quickly scaled up to 50 people in two offices.
