In 1999, my brother Aaron and I started InternetSafety.com. It seemed as though venture capitalists were throwing money at any Internet idea they could find – no business plan required. Our idea was to build a dial-up Internet service to compete with AOL, MindSpring and EarthLink. The best part was that it was a blind review.

The browser and thus the WWW and the first Internet businesses were born circa 1994–95 and there was a golden period where anything seemed possible. I started my first company in 1999 and was admittedly swept up in all of this: Magazine covers, fancy conferences, artificial valuations and easy money. There was no money train.

My initial desire to blog came from something that’s always been my approach to investing – I’m a nerd and I love to play with the technology and part of my approach has really been to understand things both at a user level and at a reasonably deep tentacle level. If you are outside internet software we are not going to invest.

The problem is that this is longer than the average economic cycle , which means you need to be able to manage in good times and bad. I believe that huge financial, productivity and technical gains come from new innovation rather than derivative thinking. It was an investment management class. We’ll re-compare notes then.

Dr. Mani is also an Internet Marketer. While I have not seen any other heart surgeon who is an Internet Marketer, Dr. Mani is more special than that. He sets aside part of the profits from his Internet Marketing initiatives to help young children with congenital heart diseases. Dr. Mani is a heart surgeon. MS: One word.

If you’re not familiar with the term it’s basically trying to help all of us who are deluged with technology to find ways to cope with the masses of information without having it ruin our lives. I think too many books are written by charlatans and have too much management jargon / double speak that I can’t stand.

it is also the title of a fabulous book from Internet 1.0 by Michael Woolf that is worth any startup founder reading to get a sense of perspective on the reality warp that is startup world during a frothy market such as 1997-1999, 2005-2007 or 2012-2014. Think DropBox, Airbnb, Uber, Maker Studios. .”
