In 1999, my brother Aaron and I started InternetSafety.com. It seemed as though venture capitalists were throwing money at any Internet idea they could find – no business plan required. Our idea was to build a dial-up Internet service to compete with AOL, MindSpring and EarthLink. The best part was that it was a blind review.

The browser and thus the WWW and the first Internet businesses were born circa 1994–95 and there was a golden period where anything seemed possible. I started my first company in 1999 and was admittedly swept up in all of this: Magazine covers, fancy conferences, artificial valuations and easy money. There was no money train.

By 1999 we had grown into the largest independent consulting firm in the world. By 1999 it seemed like everybody was growing, though. Increasingly it became difficult to tell any system integration company apart and there was a whole new breed of competitors in the market helping companies build Internet businesses.

I have been close to the tech & startup sectors for more than 20 years and I can’t think of a period in which I felt more optimistic about the innovation and value creation I see in front of us. In 1998 it was 150 million, 1999 250 million and by 2000 it had crossed 350 million. We’re online all the time and at high speed.

My initial desire to blog came from something that’s always been my approach to investing – I’m a nerd and I love to play with the technology and part of my approach has really been to understand things both at a user level and at a reasonably deep tentacle level. If you are outside internet software we are not going to invest.

I kept pointing to the artificial gains in the Nasdaq in 1999 and said, “just because you bought in Feb ’99 and sold in Sept ’99 for a large gain doesn’t meant the asset was correctly priced.&# My message to everybody at the time, “Sell! I’ve lived through two tech market corrections at close range.

I’m a huge fan of William and his writing as you can see from my review of his book Avogadro Corp. There seem to be two schools of thought on how to predict the future of information technology: looking at software or looking at hardware. A big technical challenge we studied was piping streaming video over networks.
