We told him we’d file all the legal papers, pay for his move and normalize his salary with San Francisco. It was a very strange process for me to accept transferring our most senior technologist to the US where we only had a small presence. When we started our next company, Koral, Ryan was a co-founder. Ryan accepted.

Now American Ventures is a successful multifamily and commercial real estate investment firm with a proven track record.

Ted Rheingold: In 2003 I owned and ran a web service business called OneMatchFire , and made a number of image sharing products for customers (or as side projects). By the end of 2004 I had brought on two co-founders: John Vars – who is now the Chief Product Office at TaskRabbit, and Steven Reading took over Sales and Revenue.

For starters let me use “CEO” as a proxy to include her “inner circle” which might mean co-founders or might just mean senior execs of the business. The Mind of the Founder. You scraped together enough for an angel round but not enough to pay yourself a real salary. I wasn’t surprised.

But when done well it can really help get a company going fast, professionally and without the founders having to give up much (if any) equity - or bankrupting themselves. The founders may believe they are onto such a good idea that they don’t want to give up any equity. Why bootstrap? Either way, bootstrapping is a viable model.
