Venture Capitalists on your board developed the expertise to get your firm public as soon as possible using whatever it took including hype, spin, expand, and grab market share because the sooner you got your billion dollar market cap, the sooner the VC firm could sell their shares and distribute their profits. Warning sign? At best. ~

We started working nights and weekends in late 2002 when some of the founding team were wrapping up their prior day jobs and then everybody was full time on LinkedIn by January 2003. Last fall I saw a startup with it’s back against the wall, days from shutting down, pull off a new financing round and what looks to be a promising pivot.

So their revenue figures, pre IPO financing and ownership, and other info is all widely available. But with media-based businesses, the distribution of outcomes is markedly different in part because the value capture by new disruptive startups is different. From Google Finance.
