It’s like people arguing that there’s a beautiful beach house in 2006 that represents great long-term value due to scarcity of similar property. All of that might be true, but the 2006 price might still be over-valued. So at GRP Partners we’re very active now. That doesn’t mean it’s not a bubble.

We were trying to optimize around a few criteria: price, size of round, number of syndicate partners and, of course, terms. When Salesforce.com decided to buy my company in December 2006 I dropped everything and focused religiously on closure. You need your key negotiating partner and both sets of lawyers. Yes, this was stupid.

So that we’re speaking the same language I would define “exclusive” as a period in which your company is prohibited from doing business with certain customers or business partners, which is why many incorrectly assume this is necessarily bad.
