On the web, we have many of these channels: SEM, SEO, world of mouth, PR and viral. If and when a good SEM solution shows up for iPhone, you may be able to use it to artificially drive your app into the Top 25, as a one-time event. Or if your lifetime value is high enough, you can just keep spending on SEM.
Paid - if your product monetizes customers better than your competitors, you have the opportunity to use your lifetime value advantage to drive growth. In this model, you take some fraction of the lifetime value of each customer and plow that back into paid acquisition through SEM, banner ads, PR, affiliates, etc.
Finally, I’ll write about how Eric Ries and the Lean Startup concept provided the equivalent model for productdevelopment activities inside the building and neatly integrates customer and agile development. Without the revenue to match its expenses, the company is in now danger of running out of money.
