They measure average responsiveness and compute an aggregate statistic called Apdex which can be a good indicator of site health (at minimum, any significant changes to Apdex should be investigated, and they will email you alerts about such changes). I’m hoping to speak later this year in Philly, for example, where I’ll likely be in November and/or December (also in Annapolis so maybe Washington DC and/or Baltimore?). In LA we lack the same scale of technology ecosystem as they have in the Bay Area. with high calibre technology people will get my time.
I think some of this stems from the early days of Twitter when it was presumed that it was a technology to tell people what you ate for lunch. The idea was that websites (think news, blogs) could push out a regular “feed&# in an open, XML format that could be read by an RSS Reader otherwise known as a feed aggregator.
