So I generally feel right at home in these conversations. One is explaining the world as it used to work: the importance of gatekeepers, the scarcity implied by limited distribution, and the resulting quality bar that the industry is so proud of. In other words, they are facing conditions of extreme uncertainty, just like startups.

Even if they give you conversion rate benchmarks. Clean measures of conversion rates require a clean and standard implementation of the ecommerce tags.

Their product definition fluctuates wildly – one month, it’s a dessert topping, the next it’s a floor wax. Because they have no presence in the market, they have to find distribution channels to bring in customers.
