For those of you who have been following the discussion, a Lean Startup is Eric Ries ’s description of the intersection of Customer Development , Agile Development and if available, open platforms and open source. Over its lifetime a Lean Startup may spend less money than a traditional startup.

Customer experience (CX) approaches in particular have had to develop and evolve rapidly over the last year – something which has benefitted startups and small enterprises who are able to move with agility to shift and flex to changing customer attitudes and expectations.
After these slides, these VC’s recognized that this company had dramatically reduced risk and built a startup that was agile, resilient and customer-centric. Finally, I’ll write about how Eric Ries and the Lean Startup concept provided the equivalent model for product development activities inside the building and neatly integrates customer and agile development. She quickly comes to the conclusion that the company’s positioning and marketing strategy were incorrect.
But what I wanted was an agile marketing team capable of operating independently without day-to-day direction. To do that we will create end-user demand and drive it into the sales channel, educate the channel and customers about why our products are superior, and help Engineering understand customer needs and desires.
Since that takes four months, we have to be able to predict the demand for technical support at least four months in advance, because we have to be hiring for that future demand right now. “The future is inherently unpredictable,” insists the small company, spurred on by Lean and Agile mindsets.
Once you see a real demand for your product and continue to see traction, you can then take over the development and maintenance in-house. Furthermore, they are less agile and have longer product cycles that require more documentation and usage assumptions, which still requires an in-house tech to properly manage.

The only way to know if this is to find out if there is a demand for it. You need to keep your startup lean and agile and not become big with too much money and too many people. Do market research. While one could argue that a trade show is just another demand creation activity akin to advertising or PR, trade shows are the closest eyeball-to-eyeball contact you’re company is going to have with customers, competitors and partners. Everyone should be articulate and agile in describing and demoing the products.)

These groups are adapting or adopting the practices of startups and accelerators – disruption and innovation rather than direct competition, customer development versus more product features, agility and speed versus lowest cost. It needs the tools and processes pioneered in Lean Startups. This is a big idea. What to Do?
