By the end of 1994 I had a staff job, reporting to the co-chairmen of AmeriData where I travelled all over the US helping with acquisitions and generally causing trouble. During one of the long conversations we had at the time about our future, we started talking about calling it quits and moving to Homer, Alaska.

For example, in 2006, we co-founded Techstars. At the time David Cohen, the co-founder and CEO, was unhappy with how angel investing worked. I remember sitting at my kitchen table in Homer, Alaska in July 2010 at 2am almost crying with frustration. We worked with our publisher Wiley, who took a chance on us.

I met the co-founder Laura Oden when I was in Anchorage last month to speak at the Accelerate Alaska event. She described how she met her founders at Techstars Startup Weekend in 2016. When you think of Alaska, you probably do not think of it as a popular location for producing shoes.

The view from my living room in Homer, Alaska. While I’ve never met Abbi, I’ve known David since the late 1990s when I was on the board of PeoplePC and he was a co-founder. Amy and I arrived in Homer this evening for some time in a different place. We are TV-free up here, so that means, well, books.
