We’ve had an excellent three weeks up at our house in Homer, Alaska, far away from the people we know. Many, many people reached out, provided support, opened up about their own depression, thanked me for providing leadership on this issue, or words for them, or just an example of a successful person who struggled with depression.

Over the years, we’ve been personally involved in a number of projects, such as protecting the Anchor River in Anchor Point, Alaska (the town Amy grew up in until she was eight.) A key shared value of ours is protecting our planet and we are huge fans of TNC’s science-based approach.

While in Puentas Arenas I traveled with a group mostly composed of people from the American west coast, predominantly Seattle and Alaska. There were a bunch of burly men from Alaska who had all been friends for more than 20 years. One worked the North Slope of Alaska. I am a consultant, after all, and I am seen as an expert.
