I’m a very big proponent of the “lean startup movement&# as espoused by Steve Blank & Eric Ries. Some of the best new companies of the past several years seem to stay lean until they figure out their product / market fit. Those of us that espouse “lean startups&# often do so from personal experience.
Enter “ The Lean Startup: How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses “, a New York Times bestseller by founder of IMVU (creator of 3D avatars) Eric Ries. The Lean Startup’s core is represented by the Build-Measure-Learn feedback loop.
If youre trying to design an architecture to maximize agility, how can that work if some people are working in TDD and others not? Platform selection and technical design - if your business strategy is to create a low-burn, highly iterative lean startup, youd better be using foundational tools that make that easy rather than hard.
I hope to show why lean and agile techniques actually reduce the negative impacts of technical debt and increase our ability to take advantage of its positive effects. For example, at a previous virtual world company , we spent years developing an architecture to cope with millions of simultaneous users. It was still a good trade.
The Lean Startup.”. Team realizes there are many, many vulnerabilities that were not addressed, some of which require an overhaul of the entire system architecture or methods that are already closed. by Quan Heng Lim, Cyber-Operations Consultant at Horangi. Fail Fast, Pivot.”. Agile Methodology.”. People love it, feedback is positive.
I suggested that we change the underlying architecture of our UI system so that the artists would be able to build their own UI pieces themselves and then integrate them into the product without requiring new code every time. The Lean Startup Intensive is tomorrow at Web 2.0. The engineering team wasn’t happy either.
It seems your cluster architecture is one of the key architectural constraints making continuous deployment possible. Great related post by John Shook at the Lean Enterprise Institute about technical vs. social sides of problems. The Lean Startup Intensive is tomorrow at Web 2.0. Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Sunday, January 4, 2009 Sharding for startups The most important aspect of a scalable web architecture is data partitioning. So far, this is just a summary of what all of us who have attempted to build web-scale architectures considers obvious. Support multiple sharding schemes. Easy to understand.
Of all the tactics I have advocated as part of the lean startup , none has provoked as many extreme reactions as continuous deployment , a process that allows companies to release software in minutes instead of days, weeks, or months. The Lean Startup Intensive is tomorrow at Web 2.0. Expo SF (May. for Harvard Business Revie.
Unlike Intel chips, MIPS chip architecture also made it possible to plug in a math co-processor. Personal supercomputer s meant yet again learning something completely new; new computer architectures, new applications and customers, new markets. to move their applications to our unique machine architecture.
We talk about taking advantages of the incredible agility offered by modern web architecture for extremely rapid deployment, etc. One major theory that has influenced the way I think about processes comes from Lean Manufacturing , where they use these same techniques to build cars. The Lean Startup Intensive is tomorrow at Web 2.0.
One of the times I screwed this up it left a legacy of 25 years of questionable design in microprocessor architecture. Reply My take on Customer Development and the Lean Startup | Recess Mobile Blog , on January 9, 2010 at 5:29 am Said: [.] Reply Yuri Ammosov , on December 15, 2009 at 4:28 pm Said: Hmmm. Then WHAT it IS?
We basically had a retainer with one of the pioneering folks in computational chemistry, who ported and tuned his company’s application for our rather radical architecture, and also acted as a marketeer for us in that (then quite nascent) field.
Guest post by Lisa Regan, writer for T he Lean Startup Conference. We’ve posted the full program for The Lean Startup Conference , and it includes more than three days of events for Gold pass holders and six days of events for VIP pass holders. On the evening of December 8, Ignite Lean Startup kicks off the conference.
We wanted an agile approach that would allow us to build our software architecture as we needed it, without downtime, but also without large amounts of up-front cost. The Lean Startup Intensive is tomorrow at Web 2.0. Amazing lean startup resources Is Entrepreneurship a Management Science? Expo SF (May.
For example, complex new semiconductor architectures, (i.e. a new type of graphics architecture, or a new communications chip architecture) mean you may not know if the chip performs as well as you thought until you get first silicon. In these markets it’s all about invention risk. A good case study here is most iPhone apps.
I know them right away - we can talk high-level architecture all the way down to the bits-and-bytes of his system. When the architecture needs modifying - why do we need a meeting? Building a good application architecture is not just coding. Its common to find a hacker at the heart of almost any successful technology company.
There are several lines of effort that we’re focusing on: We’re working to build the Space Force as a very Lean and Agile service. If you look at the domain and where it’s headed, and where industry is headed, there are a lot of opportunities to come up with a hybrid type of architecture. Not just a one size fits all.
He complemented their elegantly designed minicomputers and made some astute comment about their architecture (now I’m rolling my eyes, their computers were dinosaurs) and asked who were the brilliant designers. I was surprised to see that they were in the room.

Now at Imperial College Business School and Co-Founder of the Wicked Acceleration Labs , Cristobal and I wondered if we could combine the tenets of Lean (get out of the building, build MVPs, run experiments, move with speed and urgency) with the expanded toolset developed by researchers who work on Wicked problems and Systems’ Thinking.
And as Kapor himself points out, the core ideas have even older origins: The Roman architecture critic Vitruvius advanced the notion that well-designed buildings were those which exhibited firmness, commodity, and delight. SBCE feels like it should fit into the lean startup nicely, but I can't quite figure out how.
His new book on this subject, “ The Lean Startup ,” lays out how today's entrepreneurs use continuous innovation to create radically successful businesses. Business architecture pivot. Many founders envision their solution as a platform for future products, but don’t have a single killer application just yet.
They had this great architecture, and Apple had figured out to get movies into their own computers for a demo, but for the rest of us there was no physical device that allowed an average consumer to plug a video camera or VCR into and get video into a Mac.
Propensity to “lean in” before being told how to act. He knew well IBM executive sensitivity to open architecture, third-party suppliers, and micro technology, and used it to leverage funding. It’s hard to act autonomously in a big company, but it’s not hard to recognize the natural leaders.in
Books such as Steve Blank’s The Startup Owner’s Manual and Eric Ries’s The Lean Startup do a great job of exploring the challenges of the go-to – product phase, and identifying the importance of reaching product/market fit with a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). You are now ready for the go-to-scale phase.
Each team had the competence and authority to make the decisions necessary to complete the entire product development cycle, including the quality of the software, the functionality, and the architectural blueprint. Remember, lean and hungry is always better than fat and comfortable.
With that being said, corporates have generally leaned in to the generative AI trend and are currently working out their own strategy to implement generative AI and automation into their products safely. LLMs have driven an increased demand for data, caused a complete architecture change inside companies and changed how data is manipulated.

In many respects, it’s the leanness, flexibility and agility of startups that help them become successful,” he says. It is based on over six thousand years of concrete applications in architecture, urban planning, social engineering, human relationship building, tools, processes, as well as communications.
This is a great example of lean startup thinking. This is one of the most powerful aspects of web architecture, and it often gets lost in other client-server programming paradigms. As you suggest, Thought Experiment Part II is going to involve lots of changes to the classic MMO architecture that makes it more like the web.
You dont need to invent a new architecture, and you dont need to even build your architecture up-front. The Lean Startup Intensive is tomorrow at Web 2.0. Greater discipline during boom times offered more flexibility during lean years. And getting it right during the lean years, Bain reports , has a massive impact on companies’ growth rate after things improve: ( Image source ). As the recession wrapped up, they had to remind consumers of lean times.
Here’s her story of the Lean innovation accelerator she’s built for the Marines. One of the biggest benefits to this process was that it helped shift the focus of the Marines from nebulous systems-centric thinking—“The network architecture sucks”—to identifying specific pain points impeding their productivity on the job.
