The 92nd Street Y is all about strengthening community. We took one of the key values of the Y, which is around community and philanthropy and said, "After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, how could you create a day that was really about philanthropy? They decided they were going to make it all about how generous Baltimore is.
Coates grew up in a rough neighborhood of Baltimore (the same streets portrayed by my favorite show of all time, “ The Wire.”) I read quotes about how socially liberal white Americans (like myself) go out of their way to be racially and ethnically sensitive yet are quick to look down on poor White communities.
And I was training in East Baltimore at the time and most of my patients were intercity members of the Baltimorecommunity. If you'd asked me growing up in Alabama about how many members of the MSM community there were in Alabama, I'd say there must be at least 100, I don't know.
