Having a set of metrics that you watch & that you feel are the key drivers of your success helps keep clarity. And the more public you can make your goals for these key metrics the better. You will likely have multiple sets of metrics you keep depending on the company’s stage, one’s function in the company and level.

Unfortunately, many books, articles, blogs and podcasts on social media focus too heavily on the “feel good” factor of success stories. Critical roles include a director, community manager, blog editor, blogger(s), channel specialists, SEO specialists, photographers/videographers, producers, and analytics specialist.
Focus on the output metrics of that part of the product, and you make the problem a lot more clear. To promote this metrics discipline, we would present the full funnel to our board (and advisers) at the end of every development cycle. Max Levchin of Slide and Paypal has noted that 10% of Slides headcount is devoted to metrics only.

I used to think that investments in metrics were a form of waste. Customers dont care if you have good metrics, only if you have a good product. The only reason we learned the art of metrics-based decision making at IMVU was out of necessity. that justify decisions already made. I think it was $350 the next, and so on.

So what is this mysterious metric? In Adobe's Site Catalyst bounce rate is not a standard metric, but you are able to create a special custom metric. If you don't fall into those two categories you need to pay very careful attention to this metric. I am thinking of blogs. So how can you use it? #1:

This optimization results in emails with an open rate greater than 60 percent and a click through rate greater than 20 percent—an unimaginable metric if we were just sending emails blindly.
