I learned this lesson when I raised the first round of seed capital for my startup PopInShop , an online platform that connects brands and boutiques to facilitate short-term, cross-promotional shopping events. I was finishing my MBA, and through the university had access to a fund that invested in student-run businesses.

I’m not afraid to pick up the phone, cold call someone, use LinkedIn to find someone who’s recently left a company that might be considered competitive and ask them for advise around the business model and marketplace. No investor cares about a business plan. Now our biz model is lighter, more flexible.
