But when done well it can really help get a company going fast, professionally and without the founders having to give up much (if any) equity - or bankrupting themselves. The founders may believe they are onto such a good idea that they don’t want to give up any equity. Why bootstrap? Either way, bootstrapping is a viable model.

Maybe it is a publicly accessible staging server at EC2 spun up by a developer who has since left the company and not shut down because, hey, $20 a month. This helps to co-opt some security researchers so that they e.g. get in touch with you about the problem prior to just going ahead an exploiting it. Thanks for visiting!

Some of the companies that fit this parameter include Rightscale (founded by Thorsten von Eicken, a cofounder of former portfolio company GoToMyPC ) and one that I am looking at in the email archiving and compliance space which has a number of OEM partners reselling its service.
