I used to think that investments in metrics were a form of waste. Customers dont care if you have good metrics, only if you have a good product. I find it intriguing that species not only evolve against their environment, but their environment co-evolves simultaneously against them. When you look at a biological ecosystem, the creatures in it have spent thousands and thousands of years co-evolving against one another in a careful dance. A nice account of Stuart’s story is here.
It should be even more important to the founders themselves, because it demonstrates that their business hypothesis is grounded in reality. Every board meeting, the metrics of success change. These founders have not managed, to borrow a phrase from Steve Blank , to create a scalable and repeatable sales process.
I believe this is one reason why the myth of the dictatorial startup founder has such enduring appeal. Its easier to believe in a glorious future when you have only zeroes, for everyone: founders, investors, and employees. No vanity metrics should be looked at. No vanity metrics should be looked at.

In order to give people the data they need to apply the strategy, we were very open with our company metrics, making all reports generally available and easy to run.
