I’ve been involved with a number of leaders in the Colorado tech community since Wednesday morning as we’ve aggressively mobilized to address the Covid-19 crisis. Huge kudos to Bryan Leach at iBotta and Rachel Carlson at Guild Education for providing urgent and effective leadership here. Every hour counts.
I’m excited to announce the launch of Energize Colorado , a new Colorado-based non-profit to help energize companies in Colorado survive the Covid crisis and then thrive as we get the crisis under control. Five weeks later, Energize Colorado is over 200 volunteers and growing daily.
Our Colorado governor, Jared Polis, displayed an amazing act of leadership in his response to what I consider a question posed in an extreme and divisive way yesterday. Colorado Gov. Polis is Colorado's first Jewish governor. This is leadership in the time of crisis. You are not sticking it to Jared Polis.
On Saturday, Colorado Senator Mark Udall publicly opposed PIPA. I’ve been a supporter of Mark’s for many years and his willingness to listen to his constituents, think about and understand the specific issues, speak his mind, and take a leadership role continues to impress me.
The National Day of Civic Hacking is the first of a yearly event created by the White House to gather Citizen Engineers and have them use newly accessible government data to improve their communities and our entire society. In Denver, the site is focused on open data from the State of Colorado and called Hack4Colorado.
For example, you can minor in entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado College of Music. The only hard part about it, is to get well-defined problems from sponsors in the local city or government agency that you offer to students. But this type of innovation requires leadership who understands that is their goal.
While there has periodically been improvement on the margins on the issue, I think our federal government has broadly failed us on this front. The program in Colorado follows a similar approach with one major difference. The post Trying Something New On Immigration In Colorado appeared first on Feld Thoughts.
ESG investing includes environmental, social and governance investments and falls under the umbrella of “socially responsible investors” that care both about impact and profits. Governance focuses on the leadership demonstrated within the company and looks to a multitude of factors such as diversity, pay and the overall company ethics.
Government. Keys of Leadership Culture. Reliance on Government. Entrepreneurs vs. Government. Integration With The Rest of Colorado. Engage The Entire Entrepreneurial Stack. Leaders vs. Feeders. What’s A Leader? What’s A Feeder? Entrepreneurs. University. Service Providers. Mentor Driven. Risk Aversion.
I woke up to an article in Daily Camera today titled Small Business Administration trying to bring SBIC funds to Colorado. As a partner in one of the most visible VC firms in Colorado and an LP in many of the Colorado VC firms, I’ve never heard from Matthew or anyone from the SBIC.
Like other RBI firms, Decathlon does not require warrants, governance involvement, or the types of financial covenants that are often associated with other venture debt type solutions. Programs are offered in both online, in-person, and hybrid format with cohorts of leadership teams for an average of 10 companies.
(This is the sixth post in a series documenting the work I did in Colorado on the Governor’s COVID-19 Innovation Response Team – IRT. Bringing someone in from the private sector to run a public sector team only works when the rest of the team is incredibly knowledgeable about how the machinery of state government works.
More and more governing bodies are slashing taboos and favoring the research that supports the medicinal benefits of cannabis. After all, it helped Colorado return from an economic downturn and balloon to a growth rate that’s twice the national average. The cannabis industry has also immensely supported economic growth.
Parents, many of whom have been trying to balance work, parenting and being school teachers, are getting frustrated and worn down; on top of that, they don’t know what’s coming this summer and if their kids will be able to go to camp.
The core skills of founders and entrepreneurs are vision, leadership/inspiration/mobilization of teams, and a fearlessness about trying things and then seizing on the ones that work and rapidly discarding the ones that don’t, quickly absorbing learnings along the way. Of all these, failure of strong leadership stands out in my mind.
Are they running from high prices, high taxes, dysfunctional government, and wildfires? All of the investors, all of the big companies, all of the government groups?—?they In fact, the Houston city government ranks number onein the country in renewable energy use. What’s bringing them here? Count all of the people you know!
Take Boulder, Colorado as a model, they’ve successfully created their own very strong economy for startups. These towns are setting their expectations way too high while the real Silicon Valley giggles at the sight. And don’t use the word “silicon” in your name. There’s a startup for every 50 or so people there.
Today appears to be government day on Feld Thoughts. This morning I wrote about the Colorado PUC trying to shut down Uber in Colorado (bad). Senator Flake – thank you for showing leadership on this issue. Senators Udall and Flake – thank you for the leadership here. and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.)
(This is the third post in a series documenting the work I did in Colorado on the Governor’s COVID-19 Innovation Response Team – IRT. Colorado still has around 500 cases statewide – about ¼ of Westchester County. First two posts are here and here.). Friday, March 20, Day 4. They send us ZERO ventilators.

We are proud that American innovation is the envy of the world, a source of widely-shared prosperity, and a hallmark of our global leadership. Finally, we believe that government plays an important role in the technology economy by investing in infrastructure, education and scientific research. Donald Trump does not.
