(from my guest column in the Miami Herald ). A few weeks ago, I had my first-ever opportunity to visit the Miami startup ecosystem. I was visiting as part of Terrapinn Private Equity World, a leading private equity conference for the Latin American technology community.
Initially, I would like to hire people from my neighborhood, with the goal of expanding to other communities in the future. I started as a programmer, and then a database designer, and then a project manager, and I led conversion teams. So I went from San Diego to LA to Miami to the south of France. That prediction obviously turned out pretty wrong, but it did drum up a whole lot of chatter about the right ingredients for building a startup community—about New York vs Boston on the East Coast and whether cities like Austin and Seattle would ever break through. What makes people like that want to live in any particular community?

So while some investors have announced they’re moving to Austin or Miami we have actually been increasing our investments in San Francisco, opening an office with 7 investment professionals that we’ve been slowly building over the past few years. The reason VC or Angel-backed startups in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and similar cities often hire startup lawyers who aren’t local is that they (correctly) recognize that their local ecosystems (generally) lack the density to support truly specialized, scalable startup/vc law practices.
For us, there is nothing more satisfying than reading a 5 star review, over hearing a conversation after class or even being written a direct email from a student expressing how much they truly enjoyed our classes and thankful that they enrolled. We love that so many unintentional benefits came out of our classes for our students.
