I asked Tsutsumi-san to write a guest post for my blog to describe his experience with CustomerDevelopment in Japan. Back in 1990’s, I was working for one of the leading sogo shohsa (trading company) in Japan, building data communications startups. Evangelizing CustomerDevelopment in Japan.
The class teaches founders how to dramatically reduce their failure rate through the combination of business model design, customerdevelopment and agile development using the Startup Owners Manual. More importantly, it makes no demands of you to stand and deliver your weekly customerdevelopment progress in front of your peers.
It was designed to bring together many of the new approaches to building a successful startup – customerdevelopment, agile development, business model generation and pivots. The first class was an introduction to the concepts of business model design and customerdevelopment. The Adventure Begins.
Some of these advisors from the academic community would work with our of VP of Engineering and help us solve specific technical problems. I set up an advisory board as a vehicle to get these industry experts engaged with the company and product.
This was followed by an 8-minute slide presentation describing their customer discovery journey over the 10 weeks. While all the teams used the Mission Model Canvas , (videos here ), CustomerDevelopment and Agile Engineering to build Minimal Viable Products, each of their journeys was unique.

I know that this all seems obvious now with the movements started by Steven Blank ( Four Steps of Epiphany ) with the whole CustomerDevelopment processes / Lean Startup movements also popularized by people like Eric Ries. But I believe that it creates an authentic relationship with your community. Back then it seemed foreign.
We didn’t know it at the time, but with that investment we had paid for front-row VIP seats to witness the origins of CustomerDevelopment and the Lean Startup.
