Our defense department and intelligence community owned proprietary advanced tools and technology. Pete Newell and I have spent a lot of time bringing continuous innovation to government organizations.

I’ve recently met with several universities, nonprofits, and government employees who’ve all asked the same question: how can we promote entrepreneurship? The first and primary role of a government is to provide basic public goods competently. To the extent that the government fails to do that, it will retard job creation.

Before leaving government service one of my biggest challenges was to understand how my skill as a Case Officer would translate into a job in the commercial world. As I continue to talk about Startup Communities , I say over and over and over again that the leaders have to be entrepreneurs. Everyone else – who I call the “feeders” (government, university, non-profits, big companies, VCs, angel investors) – have an important role, but the leaders must be entrepreneurs.
