Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Monday, June 15, 2009 Why ContinuousDeployment? Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Tuesday, February 10, 2009 Continuousdeployment and continuous learning At long last, some of the actual implementers of the advanced systems we built at IMVU for rapid deployment and rapid response are starting to write about it. Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Sunday, October 5, 2008 The product managers lament Life is not easy when youre working in an old-fashioned waterfall development process, no matter what role you play. Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Monday, October 20, 2008 The engineering managers lament I was inspired to write The product managers lament while meeting with a startup struggling to figure out what had gone wrong with their product development process. This engineering manager is a smart guy, and very experienced.

I was delighted to be asked to give a brief talk about the MVP at the inaugural meetup of the lean startup circle here in San Francisco. Thanks Eric.
Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Tuesday, January 12, 2010 Amazing lean startup resources A year ago, there was no lean startup movement. I continue to believe that the explosion of interest in the lean startup has very little to do with me. Rich also organized the first Lean Startup Meetup right here in San Francisco.
Its had tremendous impact in many areas: continuousdeployment , just-in-time scalability , and even search engine marketing , to name a few. I owe it originally to lean manufacturing books like Lean Thinking and Toyota Production System. Similar results apply in product management, design, testing, and even operations.
kaChing has been very active in the Lean Startup movement. If you havent seen it, Pascals recent presentation on continuousdeployment is a must-see; slides are here. With case studies like this, we aim to illustrate specific Lean Startup techniques through the stories of current practitioners.
The five whys methodology has been around for some time, not just as a continuous improvement technique, but as a general problem solving method in all areas of management. As a management consultant who concentrates on thinking and problem solving, I use it often. The Lean Startup Intensive is tomorrow at Web 2.0.
Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Monday, January 19, 2009 Lean hiring tips In preparing for the strategy series panel this week, I have been doing some thinking about costs. Fundamentally, lean startups do more with less, because they systematically find and eliminate waste that slows down value creation. Another terrific post, Eric.
Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Friday, July 9, 2010 Founder personalities and the “first-class man&# theory of management At any given time, something like four percent of the US population is engaged in some form of new-company-creation. If you’re part of the Lean Startup movement, then you’re actually making it happen.
So what does CTO mean, besides just "technical founder who really cant manage anyone?" I always assumed I wouldnt manage anybody. Being a manager didnt sound fun - deep down, who really wants to be held accountable for other peoples actions? So I wound up learning the discipline of managing other people. I dont think so.
I spent some time with his company before the conference and discussed ways to get started with continuousdeployment , including my experience introducing it at IMVU. Moreover, approaching the problem from the direction that I had intuitively is a recipe for never reaching a point where continuousdeployment is feasible.

Maybe youd like to start with The lean startup , How to listen to customers , or What does a startup CTO actually do? ) But I managed a few "good learning experiences" before throwing myself full-bore into IMVU. Eventually, I came to summarize these themes with the phrase " the lean startup." So much for timing.
I am convinced one of Joel Spolskys lasting contributions to the field of managing software teams will turn out to be the Joel Test , a checklist of 12 essential practices that you could use to rate the effectiveness of a software product development team. For more on continuousdeployment, see Just-in-time Scalability.
Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Monday, June 22, 2009 Pivot, dont jump to a new vision In a lean startup , instead of being organized around traditional functional departments, we use a cross-functional problem team and solution team. Thats not the goal of a lean startup. Your writing is certainly not lean.

One of the sayings I hear from talented managers in product development is, “good enough never is.&# Especially in teams that are managing by objectives (or OKRs), the pressure to deliver is intense. Good managers work hard to create an environment where this courage thrives. But action/paralysis are not the only options.

This theory has become so influential that I have called it one of the three pillars of the lean startup - every bit as important as the changes in technology or the advent of agile development. I am continuously coaching people to get out and see what is really going on. Tom Peters called the Management By Walking Around - MBWA.
I hope to show why lean and agile techniques actually reduce the negative impacts of technical debt and increase our ability to take advantage of its positive effects. Lean vs. debt In the world of physical goods, the leaner a supply chain is, the less debt is required to operate it. A similar relationship applies to technical debt.
One of the most common questions I get about the lean startup methodology is, "but what about Steve Jobs ?" So how do you reconcile his success with the lean startup, which seems to suggest the opposite?" Plus, the premise of the question misunderstands the lean startup, too. And he doesnt shy away from big-bang launch events.
Guest post by Lisa Regan, writer for T he Lean Startup Conference. We’ve posted the full program for The Lean Startup Conference , and it includes more than three days of events for Gold pass holders and six days of events for VIP pass holders. Balancing competing objectives is a recurring theme on this blog - its the central challenge of all management decisions. The best candidates have managed to teach me something about a topic I thought I already knew a lot about. This responsibility falls squarely to the hiring manager. Communication. Nice post, well explained.
And yet, when I suggest this practice to hiring managers and recruiters alike, they rarely do it. Hiring managers say, “the recruiter would never go for it&# while recruiters say, “the hiring manager won’t accept it.&# I already advocate cross-functional teams as part of the lean startup methodology.
Managing these situations is hard for any company, but potentially lethal for a startup. The theory is that there is some truth in both camps, and the right way to manage the disagreement is to sprinkle a little bit of both into our plans. To the people being managed that way, it feels like the boss is being capricious or arbitrary.
