On Friday, at the LA CTO Forum , I heard from a couple of CTOs having trouble finding good developers. I don’t have specific suggestions for people you can hire. I’ll leave that for another discussion as the inquiry that I keep getting is more about local talent than offshore talent. My methods are pretty vanilla.

Do we have offshore developers? Hire qualified internal resources or outsource as needed for the required IT positions. Bring on a security-conscious CTO at the beginning. As a startup, companies should answer these questions when researching their own personal cyber security goals: Are we an online business?

As a one-man founder bootstrapping the business, this allowed me to hire a team for much less money. Then, in the evening – as the team returned from their lunch – I would concentrate on working with them in real time over Skype on building our product. Contract Remote Teams On A Per Project Basis.

There were a lot of questions about outsourcing/offshoring and startups. I dont see any reason why having the team offshore is any more of a liability in this area than, say, having to do this work while selling through a channel (and hence, not having direct access to customers). Talk about waste.

The reality however is that entrepreneurs should only play the equity game with newer, very focused firms that specialize in this practice and not traditional work for hire or a blend. Development firms that advertise part equity and cash are simply not mature in defining their model, and thus they have no business taking stakes in others.

Eventually I was able to scrape up a few bucks and hired Sarah to build me a website prototype. Eventually Ill hire a software geek of my own, but right now Im doing just fine without one. CEO, VP Products and CTO must all be in the physical location. This is a topic that comes up often in Los Angeles because many CEOs are tempted to hire their tech teams in the Bay Area. I prefer the first sales hires to be in the home office. What about offshoring? First, many people confuse outsourcing and offshoring.
