Todd Gitlin of Safire Partners was nice enough to compile some data on Start CTO Salary and Equity at Venture Backed Companies for the LA CTO Forum and present last year. The data is a bit tough to deal with via a post, so I've shared it two ways: You can find a PDF with some analysis at: CTO Equity Compensation PDF.

This is purely anecdotal, but it seems like a lot of companies are hiring technology talent here in SouthernCalifornia. And we have been looking to hire several positions (but are being really picky as is normally the case). I’ll be curious to see if that bears up at our Los Angeles CTO Forum meeting tomorrow.
I've talked about that in lots of other posts, so you can visit some of these to help determine what you specifically need: Startup CTO or Developer Startup Software Development – Do Your Homework Before You Develop Anything Key ingredients in the equation are: How complex is the system? Do you have dollars to pay for development?
Because I am true to the hiring practices I preach, I wanted a strong exec who would “ punch above their weightclass ” by taking a job they hadn’t yet done but would hugely aspire to and thus work harder to out perform. We will stay in LA and then SouthernCalifornia before branching out into our 2nd & 3rd markets.
On Friday, at the LA CTO Forum , I heard from a couple of CTOs having trouble finding good developers. And it’s not just me, Ben Kuo just posted - Good news for developers (and jobs) We’ve been talking with a lot (and I mean a LOT) of people who are looking for developers in SouthernCalifornia (Los Angeles and beyond).
Companies also use social networking sites in the hiring process, and increasingly, to do innovative advertising (such as the recent Jack in the Box campaign). He is a former chairman of the Business Software Alliance, and currently is Chair of the LA Chapter of the Technology Council of SouthernCalifornia.
I’ve covered this topic many times before, but I keep coming back to it, because everytime I turn around I’m talking with both startups and established companies in SouthernCalifornia who are telling me they are looking for technical talent to join their company. Tags: Jobs SouthernCalifornia.
