Regional Angel funds that pool investors capital and typically make a one time investment in a startup, sometimes at an early stage but often at a slightly laterstage. Late stage large regionally based funds that invest in late stage or mezzanine deals. Large regionally based early stage funds have mostly failed.
Yet for every founder there are 10-20 other employees who take the near-equivalent risks in joining an early-stage company. If you’re not a founder (by choice, timing or temperament,) you may be an early employee or a laterstage startup employee. Founders know they want to start something. You’re not joining a big company.

Of course, bringing startups (whether prospective or existing portfolio companies) closer to operating divisions has business and customerdevelopment benefits. Could they excel at customerdevelopment with enterprises? Can the founders communicate well? Are they good sales people? It’s the same as approaching any VC.
