I talk to roughly 2 or 3 new startups every week who need advice from an experienced CTO. Of course, I provide part-time CTO services. But the reality is that I engage with about 5 new startups each year which means that I end up working with less than 5% of the startups where I provide these free consulting sessions.

Then, as I always recommend, it’s time to establish a formal agreement or contract to cement the partnership.
I asked some of the same questions I ask in my Free Startup CTOConsulting Sessions and then I get to a very common conversation: Me : Do you have specs? Me : Product definition, use cases, feature list, wireframes, comps, really whatever you have. Founder : Ummm. what do you mean? Founder : Umm.
When I talk with early-stage companies, often the discussion starts with them asking me about Hiring a CTO for Your Startup , or Finding a Technical Cofounder for Your Startup or How to Find Programmers for Your Startup. These companies are very early-stage and definitely have not shown product/market fit. Far from it.
they need a developer more than they need a CTO. What happens when you have a really good developer is that a gap exists where you may not ask the right questions to specify the right system, consider appropriate 3rd party technologies, etc. Many are not interested in 3rd party technologies that can streamline development.

As a CTO, I can definitely say without a doubt that few people understand what a CTO does. When I tell someone I’m a CTO, I’m often met with a blank stare. Even when someone is aware of what a CTO does, they often have limited context due to the wide variety of CTO roles.

It reminded me of a client situation from my first company, Feld Technologies. We were working on a logistics project with a management consulting firm for one of the largest retail companies in the world. I’d dress up in a suit and go with the management consultants to the client and participate in meetings.)

I mean, you don’t have to build an actual business—you can just mimic the movements and demonstrate something that looks like a startup on paper, without any of the necessary risk taking, lessons learned or even a fraction of the effort—all the stuff that investors like to see. No revenues, no costs.
When I first incorporated my company back in 2009, the lawyers I had contracted with to trademark the company name and logo desperately tried to convince me to change the name. When I retired from my high-tech corporate job of 21 years, I knew I wanted to run a consulting business, but I wasn’t sure which services I wanted to provide.

A new definition. When I was a teenager I desperately wanted to become a management consultant. You think losing your CTO and co-founder is stressful? Adam MacBeth Tuesday, April 07, 2009 10 Startup Red Flags Ive worked on a number of startups: from seed-stage through IPO, as a founder, employee, advisor, and consultant, as well as evaluating a bunch from the outside, so Ive seen my share of screw-ups.
