Here’s a problem I bet every non-technical founder has experienced: the communication gap between what the biz devteam wants and what the tech team thinks they want, and vice versa. You need to build trust between these teams. This makes people more aware of what their team members are up to and creates more harmony.
I was paid less in salary in 2004 than I was paid at the job I quit in 1999 (a job I had held 8+ years). I learned how to better run a product management process. I learned how to integrate customers into our productdevelopment process. I learned how to establish sales targets and how to manage a sales pipeline.
In Part Two, I’ll talk about some of the practices we’re using in our product management and developmentteams. If we drove revenue above costs, we got to take home a salary. It was stressful, but productively stressful and fun. We’ve done a lot of different things, but the major focus has been, well, focus.

This generation wants an overlap of ‘work and play’ and looks for benefits outside of salary increases. If these projects or action items don’t contribute to building the product or getting new customers, consider canceling or de-prioritizing them!
