Most consulting services, like marketing, are not scalable, since they must be delivered by experts, and cloning experts is slow and expensive. These are more likely scalable and investable.

These misses weren’t in some tangential markets – missing search, mobile and the cloud were directly where Microsoft users were heading. While they’ll likely never regain the market dominance they had in the 20 th century, (their business model continues to be extremely profitable) Nadella likely saved Microsoft from irrelevance.

And because the price of any commodity or stock is not static and changes every day, you might not understand how to read trends over longer periods. It’s not necessary for you to analyse market research to calculate which direction markets are expected to move.

CRM became more sophisticated, resulting in detailed monthly statements and targeted direct marketing. Without the Fan Club, I would have to spend money on other types of marketing which are more expensive and don’t encourage repeat business. Stocking up is the traditional way of converting cash into commodities.
