AOL was controlled by one company and the Internet was distributed. They controlled distribution to the masses. The conventional wisdom at Fox’s headquarters is that MySpace had “made&# both YouTube & Photobucket by allowing them distribution. At the bottom end of the stack is storage (S3) and processing (EC2).

We picked a write oriented benchmark using the standard Cassandra "stress" tool that is part of the product, and Denis ran and analyzed the tests on Amazon EC2 instances. The time taken by EC2 to create 288 new instances was about 15 minutes out of our total of 66 minutes. All instances are created using the EC2 auto-scaler feature.

Consider using Amazon EC2, 99Designs uses it, they get 5.25TB of images uploaded frequently, EC2 helped them scale with customer demand. The main difference is that they were able to leverage their distribution channel. He mentioned that an idea is worth nothing and often times fails because lack of distribution channel.

The focus was S3 - storage service, EC2 - their compute cloud, their queuing system, and their flexible payment system. The EC2 is very similar to having a Linux box in a colocation facility. I'm assuming that Amazon will get the DNS/load distribution issue figured out and then this would seem to be a pretty compelling offering.

They then launched processing capabilities (EC2) and we startups suddenly didn’t need to buy production servers. The larger ones also do more to hold CEO summits, create recruiting databases, set up email distribution lists, create pools of stock options that can be shared across companies, etc.
