AOL was controlled by one company and the Internet was distributed. They controlled distribution to the masses. The conventional wisdom at Fox’s headquarters is that MySpace had “made&# both YouTube & Photobucket by allowing them distribution. At the bottom end of the stack is storage (S3) and processing (EC2).

We had to buy Oracle database licenses, UNIX servers, a Sun Solaris operating system, web servers, load balancers, EMC storage, disk mirrors for redundancy and had to commit to a year-long hosting agreement at places such as Exodus. When I built my first company starting in 1999 it cost $2.5 Open-Source Software & Horizontal Computing.

The focus was S3 - storage service, EC2 - their compute cloud, their queuing system, and their flexible payment system. The EC2 is very similar to having a Linux box in a colocation facility. I'm assuming that Amazon will get the DNS/load distribution issue figured out and then this would seem to be a pretty compelling offering.

Maybe it is a publicly accessible staging server at EC2 spun up by a developer who has since left the company and not shut down because, hey, $20 a month. It’s no shortcut for patching your servers/apps, but I’d also recommend using something like Cloudflare to help protect against distributed attacks. Ryan Hellyer.

IT folks leveraged the web and Google not just for applications but also to download core software to help run their internal operations. Phase 3 - Googlization of IT - have as much of your infrastructure as you can run like Google's - distributed, commodity-based, and in the cloud on a private basis.
