Eventually, our biggest client we maintained was the Home Shopping Network (HSN), and we grew that relationship to be one of their top handbag brands. One of our top goals was always to have a New York showroom, especially one who had established relationships with the top accounts from Europe, the Middle East and Russia.

China, Russia, Brazil, India, Indonesia all meet those criteria. One of the groups I spoke to was the Australian Sports Technology Network. While the network was very helpful getting these startups together and introduced to investors, it wasn’t clear how and when these startups tested their “going global” hypotheses.

In Russia, President Putin’s office just stopped using PC’s and switched to typewriters. The microcode is distributed by 1) Intel or by 2) Microsoft integrated into a BIOS or 3) as part of a Windows update. Yet the one company’s name that hasn’t come up as part of the surveillance network is Intel. George Orwell.

Countries such as the UK , Russia and Finland are trying to replicate its ecosystem, to stimulate their local industries. This tendency to be more outspoken could also be seen in networking and pitching, where there was much less awkwardness than with Europeans. Silicon Valley is a hub. Bigger is Better.
