P.S. Three types of external providers are not mentioned because they are well known: open-source software stacks, domain name (DNS) providers, and marketing/socialnetworking sites. Amazon EC2 – Computing, server management, hosting. Your mileage may vary. Real-time Communication (internal and external). Backend Support.
The trick is delivering business insights over this channel: use socialnetworks to support relationship management. BROWN: Impersonation on socialnetworks is a big problem. Socialnetworking is governed by SEC 17a4, and SEC hasn’t opined on this. Ask the senator who was on TV. Corporates don’t.
A notable site is FaceSmash which sold for $30k the week the movie SocialNetwork came out. Even Perez Hilton blogged about Flippa because of its relationship to FaceSmash and SocialNetwork. This is interesting because I personally wonder why Amazon keeps Mechanical Turk and EC2 under the Amazon brand.
cloud computing (Amazon AWS and EC2, etc.) Social media related skills are also big, i.e. Build a software-as-a-service web site, even just a dead simple one, using the latest technology. For bonus points, make sure the back end uses Amazon EC2 and S3. Build a Facebook application or other socialnetworking app.
I was also surprised by the performance improvement on dedicated hardware as compared to EC2 instances of roughly 10x. However, startup founders who are building applications that have: Large Audiences - consumer facing Complex Processing - examples: Matching , SocialNetwork Analysis, Compatibility Scoring, etc.
Jackie: I would recommend instead Amazons EC2 and S3 platforms. That said, I dont think EC2 is reliable enough to depend upon, and the entire reputation of a startup can hinge on that. socialnetwork for sports fans! In recent years, weve also got great new options all up and down the stack, in particular things like Amazon EC2 and RightScale (none of which would be possible without the free software movement). At the time we viewed Amazon’s offering, EC2 as too nascent. I have talked in the past about other layers that are emerging particularly in socialnetworking and mobile applications. How on Earth could I rely on Amazon to guarantee me performance so that I didn’t risk slow response times for my customers?
They write everything from assembly to jQuery, on PCs to mobile phones, doing hard core computer graphics to high level socialnetworking. Plus the tools used by startups to grow quickly (EC2 for example) are much cheaper for linux than for Windows. They’ve tried everything. Everything, that is, but.NET.
