Do you believe in the Red Shift theory?

BeyondVC

The first time I heard the term Red Shift was from my portfolio company, Greenplum. Greenplum has used red shift to characterize the nature of the existing database market where exponential data growth driven by network computing and internet applications have outstripped the capacity of existing mainstream vendors. Hence, a new approach was needed (our database software running on commodity clusters) which would allow companies to load and query terabytes of data at 10-100x performance and scal

Interviewing Tip: Stress Test Critical Thinking. Please.

Occam's Razor

Interviewing is art, and perhaps the most important thing you could do for your company. My post with tips on hiring web analysts ( Hiring? What Works: Fresh blood or old hands? Experience or Novicity? ) generated lots of comments [25!] and emails. The most common request was for tips on how to pick the right employer, I think that's a reflection that this is a buyers market [I promise to write that post just as soon as I can].

Networking to a Job - Practical Advice

SoCal CTO

For some reason over the past week, I've been asked by three different people I know about job opportunities that might fit them. Since, I've given them the same advice, I thought it was worth putting in my blog. I personally believe that the best way to hire, find partners, and find a job is through a network. So the key question is: How can I leverage my network?

Coda- one window web development for OS X

Jason Ball

I’ve been using Panic’s Coda , everything-web-development tool, and agree with others , it is the bee’s knees. Not only is it a great web development tool, it’s five tools in one window: HTML Editor, CSS Editor, Terminal, FTP, Browser and Library. One of the great features is saving your work on a “Site” When you close Coda, all the tabs you had open while working on a particular site are saved- essentially saving your entire workspace.

Lunch 2.0 in Santa Monica - And Other Events

SoCal CTO

I've been remiss in posting to this blog. Very busy on a couple interesting start-ups. More on them in a couple months. In any case, I went by Lunch 2.0 in Santa Monica last Friday. It was way too crowded (250 people in a tiny space). But saw a few folks I hadn't seen in a while and connected with a couple of new people. I saw that Ben Kuo wrote about it: More networking events His comment that the turn-out suggested that there likely would be more of these is probably true.

Rethink Web Analytics: Introducing Web Analytics 2.0

Occam's Razor

On Sept 5th I had the distinct pleasure of being invited to present as a part of the Authors@Google series. As the author of a new book it was such a thrill to be invited, especially when you look at impressive authors who have been invited (some of my favorites: Seth Godin , George Soros , David Brooks , Ben Cohen , Clotilde Dusoulier ). The title of my talk was: Redefining Web Analytics.

Too many chiefs, not enough indians

BeyondVC

Before I dive into this post, I want to apologize to those who may be sensitive to the non-PC nature of this. Anyway, as always, I have met and spoken with a number of startups during the past week. There are obviously all different types of companies with different funding needs but the ones that have stood out negatively for me are the startups that come in with a pre-baked senior management team and no product.

Video advertising just got a big boost

BeyondVC

NBC just announced that it is going to offer free TV show downloads online allowing viewers to take more control of their content. I agree with Fred ,however, that while this is a smart move that this is only half a step since they are limiting the view to 7 days before it self destructs. More importantly, this makes me think about the free vs. paid discussion and how media companies are increasingly understanding the possibilities and scale that free can provide over paid.

I am definitely the first one to understand that there is no free lunch on the web. At the end of the day, someone has to pay for all of the great services and content out there. To boot, I am a big believer in the ad-driven model of content. To this point, there is a battle being fought at every web content company on a daily basis between product manangement, engineering, and ad sales.

Board meeting advice

BeyondVC

Over three years ago, I wrote a lengthy post on how to run a great board meeting. And after having been at a few board meetings in the past couple of weeks, I was reminded again of one of the most important rules of running a great board meeting – be prepared and make sure there are no surprises for you and for the board members. Here is an excerpt from that post: 1.

A few new ones I’ve come across this week are: aiderss. feedhub. pipes. silobreaker (thanks Rob).
