Excellent Analytics Tip #13: Measure Macro AND Micro Conversions.

Occam's Razor

We love our conversion rates. :) Really really. Part of me is glad because my book and the Trinity strategy and the Web Analytics 2.0 mindset all stress the importance of measuring Outcomes. No Outcomes = No Happiness. But I have come to realize that we are not being the best we can be by focusing on just the overall website conversion rate. We are leaving money on the table.

It's Always Sunny on the Web

Genuine VC

Ben Kunz wrote an interesting article in this week’s BusinessWeek, but it wasn’t the controversial and inaptly-named title (“ Why Widgets Don’t Work ”) which caught my attention. Rather, it was his framework for the “history of the web” which did. He outlined a transition among three distinct phases of consumers’ primary activity online from receiving , to hunting , and now doing.

Direct ad sales and startups

BeyondVC

I have recently met a number of startups with interesting consumer applications or services. As expected, many of these startups have a vision to rely on advertising to pay the bills. And like many startups, a number of these companies have plans to add a direct ad sales staff over time. That makes a ton of sense, but what I believe is that many entrepreneurs underestimate the direct capital and management costs necessary to build such a team.

Logobama

Eric Friedman

Logobama is a simple site that allows you to take the logo from Obama’s campaign and make it your own. The best way to get your message out there can sometimes be to let people do they want with it. There is of course some fundraising going on too, but it seems to be a very smart idea.

Wow, who would have thought Steve’s “One more thing” would be a $100 million fund dedicated to iPhone apps. (It’s not everyday that I can blog about Apple AND Venture Capital in the same post…). The only part that threw me was it’s Kleiner Perkins and not Sequoia. Unless my history is wrong, Sequoia backed Apple , not KPCB- so why aren’t they running the iFund?

The economic headwinds are getting stonger

BeyondVC

I was waiting for this day to happen. Each day I go online and also glance at the newspaper, and there is nothing but bad news. And yes, it is true that some of the best technology companies were built when the economy was at its worst. And I always like to think that it takes a little longer for some of these negative effects to trickle down to smaller companies and startups.

LinkedIn Now with Linked Companies

Eric Friedman

LinkedIn is now making a new move to allow companies to have their own LinkedIn Company pages. LinkedIn uses this knowledge to display recent hires, related companies, recent promotions, top locations for employees, and so-called “headliners” (people who get lots of profile views and mentions in the press). The data has also been used for company comparison purposes.

Twitter functions we wish existed

Eric Friedman

I was recently browsing Twitter and began thinking about the instant nature of everyone posting. As I have said before there are many conversations happening live on Twitter that may never get blogged. This got me started on this blog post about features that I wish existed. It is a culmination of my colleagues requests, other twitter users, and my own random filter on the whole topic.
