Entreprenuer Questions

SoCal CTO

Chris Gammil and I just spent some quality time together with a new, private group that is advising start-ups here in Los Angeles. The goal is to have start-ups learn from each other and from others who have been through the experience. So, far it's turning out great. The primary question we ask is: What's Keeping You Up at Night Chris provided a list of common issues: How much is enough?

ProfessorVC: What does it take to be an Angel Investor?

Professor VC

ProfessorVC. The last blogger in Silicon Valley. Thursday, May 29, 2008. What does it take to be an Angel Investor? This is often a tough question to answer. To the SEC, it means that you are an accredited investor and To the man (or woman) on the street, a minimum qualification would seem to be an interest and ability to invest in early stage ventures.

Mozy (aka how not to backup your files)

Jason Ball

I posted a great review of Mozy 12 months ago. I even used the word "snazzy" I just cancelled my account with them. I absolutely DO NOT recommend their backup service. (Please be warned, a rant follows.). <rant> My MacBook Pro hard drive failed earlier this year and I needed to restore from my Mozy backup. After following their restore procedure, it became apparent that many, many GB of information were missing.

I miss Kozmo.com (Wakozi.com)

Eric Friedman

I was handed a flyer the other day for a new delivery service in Manhattan called Wakozi.com. The interface is cool and I may check it out next time I need instant delivery. It definitely looks interesting but I sure miss the days of Kozmo.com 1 hour delivery of anything you wanted.

Raising capital and meeting expectations

BeyondVC

What I like to tell portfolio companies is that on average it will take 6 months to raise capital with some cycles being shorter and some being longer. Given that, it is imperative for a company to start thinking about its next round well ahead of time and the milestones it needs to hit to have the right momentum to get potential investors excited. One area that I would like to caution entrepreneurs is being too aggressive on the milestones and revenue forecast, particularly in the near term.

ProfessorVC: Academically challenged

Professor VC

ProfessorVC. The last blogger in Silicon Valley. Tuesday, May 6, 2008. Academically challenged. My colleague, Joel West, wrote a blog post yesterday responding to an article in the Financial Times on the looming shortage of b-school faculty. In the post, he raises the age old question of whether business students are better served by traditional academics or those with current, practical business experience.

Web 2.0 companies not producing cash?

Eric Friedman

FT has an interesting look at “web 2.0″ companies and how they are not producing cash. The shortage of revenue among social networks, blogs and other “social media” sites that put user-generated content and communications at their core has persisted despite more than four years of experimentation aimed at turning such sites into money-makers.

The next generation web – scaling and data mining matters (continued)

BeyondVC

I had some interesting meetings yesterday and as I reflected on them this morning, one common theme emerged which is that the next generation of the web will be built on data mining and extracting intelligence from the reams of data web services collect on a daily basis. This reminds me of a post I made in March of 2006 titled "The Next Generation Web – scaling and data mining will matter" where I mention: I truly believe the next battleground will be based on scaling the back end

Post-Americanism

skip to main | skip to sidebar. aweissman.com. Maximizing the serendipity around you. May 4, 2008. Post-Americanism. This week, I traded alot of emails with a great hacker in Barcelona, had a skype call with a CEO in London, and had lunch on Friday with a South African and a half British/half French guy (at a Filipino restaurant, natch). I personally feel provincial, what with a simple NY pedigree.

Old school content has value…again

BeyondVC

Every day it seems we are reading about the power of social networking to transform the Internet and how we communicate online and also consume and discover new content. While that is true and clearly changing the consumption habits of online users, today seems like a flashback to the old school Internet days where traditional content was king. First IAC announced the acquisition of Lexico Corp which owns dictionary.com, thesaurus.com, and reference.com and then CBS announced the acquisition of

Outbound Marketing – Following up

Eric Friedman

A few months ago I had to open a new bank account with Citibank. The experience did not go well to say the least, which was sad because I have banked with Citibank for over 10 years. They did however follow up with me, the new customer, about a month later to see how things were going. To my surprise they did not recognize that I was already a Citibank customer and did not connect the dots between accounts (an easy thing to let slide).

Open vs. closed networks and Facebook chat

BeyondVC

As you know, I have always been a believer in open standards (see my post from January 2006 ). Being a market leader, it is quite easy for Facebook to create their own standard similar to how every other instant messaging network was started. And to that end, Facebook started down that path. But just today, it announced that it was extending its chat and opening up its service by offering XMPP/Jabber support.

Nokia-an Internet company???

BeyondVC

As I have mentioned before, Nokia is one of the few handset manufacturers to get it (See my post from 2/07 on this). Nokia understands that hardware margins are eroding and like in many technology businesses the value is in the software and monthly service revenue. In addition, as time goes by, more and more people will be using their phones and data services to get information and communicate with friends.
