by Michael McCloy of Maximillion GPS Adventures. Whether you are running an organisation or managing a team, you always look for people who are committed, diligent, feel satisfied at work and are willing to stick around. But here’s the bummer. You can never recruit such employees because they are already ‘committed’ to someone else’s goals. Which leaves you with people you already have and a bunch of newbies that require a lot of training.

Being in love is great. Being in love with your business, when you’re an entrepreneur, is even better. Waking up each morning knowing you are getting to do exactly what you love is more than most people could ever say about any “job” they have had. Although there are days when tossing in your hat seems like a viable option, remembering how much you love your “job” can quickly snap an entrepreneur out of that mentality.

Even after many years mentoring entrepreneurs and advising businesses, I continue to be surprised by the primary focus on products and processes, and the often incidental attention to hiring and nurturing the right people. Employees are still too often thought of as a commodity, to be acquired “just in time” for the lowest cost, and managed as a disposable asset.

But… this year’s WWDC didn’t feature the significant product launches of yesteryear. Instead, the crowds watched the unveiling of Apple Arcade – the games subscription service. On the one hand, it indicates the growing importance ‘services’ business hold is for Apple.

Experiential learning is learning by example; it allows you to learn by experience. For business owners, this is an excellent way to give employees a chance to hone their skills. They don’t just learn by sitting in seminars and reading through books. But, they also learn through practical experience. It also allows them to practice effective measures in going about with their job, which also results in better productivity for employees.

Board Effect
NOVEMBER 15, 2019
As soon as a new board director gets appointed, that’s the best time to start planning for their replacement. Recruiting, nominating and appointing board directors takes time. If boards wait until they have a vacancy, it could leave them with an unbalanced, or an inefficient, board. Effective succession planning must be a continual process. Effective nominating committees are a hub of activity.

IP steps for startups should be the same as for large multinationals, but within their budget. Make IP decisions and do so early. One of the main (and early) steps is to make a considered decision about what IP means to your business and what IP tools will be used to support your business model.
