For some reason, I haven’t heard much about the next generation of the Internet ( Web 3.0 ) lately, which probably means it isn’t happening as fast as everyone predicted. I suspect the real challenge is not the semantic web technology , but new attractive business models from smart entrepreneurs. are appearing. are appearing.

buzz is hype, but things are changing on the Internet, and bits and pieces of Web 3.0 Twelve-year-olds are running million-dollar-social networks, your grandma is tweeting, and your long-lost cousin runs a popular tribe on Second Life. We have many seasoned entrepreneurs who have built successful companies here and made a lot of money for investors and themselves. I like to repeat the mantra, “necessity is the mother of all invention,&# meaning that because investors have this expectation you find entrepreneurs that focus on nearer term monetization.

Personally, I believe that the Semantic Web will become mainstream in the next few years (I actually have a bet on this with some college friends). After reading the wonderful blogpost on the BBC’s dynamic semantic publishing system , it reminded me that the Semantic Web has two audiences: the common web user (my mom) and developers.

LA not only produced the obvious – MySpace – but also created the whole category of sponsored search (Overture), AdSense (Applied Semantics), Local Search (City Search), comparison shopping (PriceGrabber, Shopzilla) and lead generation (LowerMyBills). We have accomplished much yet have much work to do.
