Something happened in the past 7 years in the startup and venture capital world that I hadn’t experienced since the late 90’s — we all began praying to the God of Valuation. And then in the late 90’s money crept in, swept in to town by public markets, instant wealth and an absurd sky-rocketing of valuations based on no reasonable metrics.

Until recently it was headquartered 2 blocks from our offices in Santa Monica so we literally saw it emerge under our feet and we proudly invested in the last 3 rounds of financing. How could Bird really be worth the reported $2 billion valuation that I read about in this press? Forget the valuation?—?I Not at all.

On June 18, Aswath Damodaran , a finance professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, published an article on FiveThirtyEight titled “ Uber Isn’t Worth $17 Billion. Financial models, especially valuation models, are interesting in that they can be particularly precise. It now has high liquidity from South San Jose to Napa.

Earlier today, the folks from Afore Capital hosted their inaugural “Pre-Seed Summit” in San Francisco. with a median post-money valuation of $10.7M — these are the highest Pitchbook has recorded. OK, so microVC funds and smaller pre-seed financings could really be a thing. Some press showed up, too.
