Getting something to market and getting funding override any other concerns. But be careful, and mind the gap – the Founder-Developer Gap, that is! But hiring a lead developer, or even a VP of Engineering, can create a gap between the founders and the developers. Is it a tiny crack, or a widening chasm?

While it seemed like a good idea and had the Navy’s backing, the founders got turned down for funding by companies, investment bankers and everyone, until they talked to John Parker. Norris became the VP of Engineering, Engstrom the VP of Research, and Meader VP of Manufacturing. Why Minneapolis/St.

Furthermore, when faced with adversity only great teams can respond to competitors, markets, funding environments, staff departures, PR disasters and the like. Rather, give titles such as VP of Engineering, Product/Technology, Sales, Marketing, Finance, etc. Don’t make everyone a founder. Seed to Series A.
