Funny graphic by @shanesnow that captures the difference between web designers vs. webdevelopers: Like the issue of Startup CTO or Developer , often startup founders who are less technical have this same question. Do I need a designer or a developer?
By Uri Foox, founder of Pixafy. If you are a business owner who is not an expert in webdevelopment, finding someone (or an agency) you can trust to build your website is critical. To help with your vetting process, here are eleven questions to ask your would-be developers before making a decision: 1.
I''ve written before about finding WebDevelopment Firms in Los Angeles. I just got an email asking about exactly this: I''m with a new company that needs some software built, but doesn''t need (or have the resources for) a large staff of software developers. The firm is less than two years old. The firm is completely virtual.
But if you aren’t careful, you’ll end up with a website that’s akin to a pig with lipstick. Far too many startup teams focus on web design without putting the necessary emphasis on webdevelopment. Before you can get to web design, you need to build a solid foundation and strategic framework.
These are with no doubt worthwhile goals, but I’d like to pose an important challenge for founders: Make learning and development your key resolution in 2013. Learn to Develop an iPhone or iPad App in 4 Weeks. A step-by-step guide for aspiring developers with no coding or Objective-C experience.
You can either search for a technical co-founder who shares the same vision – which is a lot harder than it sounds – or look at outsourcing to a competent and affordable agency that can help you put something together (but without the soul). While fairly easy to actually code, the hard part was using the online guides I found.
Aaron Skonnard is the CEO and co-founder of Pluralsight , an online training resource for Webdevelopers and IT professionals. Let’s look at five advantages code-savvy founders and CEOs bring to their investors and businesses: 1. Navigating the tech landscape. Is this whole “iPad” thing going anywhere?
Every business person with a dollar and a dream these days thinks they’re a technical co-founder away from interweb stardom. That’s something that a business founder might have some ideas about, but it really takes a product manager to weigh resource constraints, internal input, customer demands, etc. It just works.
Rachael is enrolled at the Startup Institute , an eight-week program that teaches its pupils the nuances of webdevelopment, web design, technical marketing, or sales and account management. She is a student on the webdevelopment track—and based on her background, that might seem a little hard to believe.
Hiring seems to be the preferred use of seed funds (by investors and founders), whereas I'd prefer a focus on customer acquisition. And that should be the focus of the founders -- to find the special fit that will make your company take off. The startup founder is definitely not ready to hire a CTO. They need to conserve cash.
by Deepak Chauhan, CEO and founder of VOCSO Web Studio. He is the CEO & Founder of VOCSO Web Studio , a website design & development agency based in Delhi/NCR, India. Professionalisms web design webdevelopment' You can contact him on Facebook , Twitter , Google+ , LinkedIn.
- Make sure you go through the 32 Questions Developers May Have Forgot to Ask a Startup Founder. Do you have dollars to pay for development? The bad news is that Finding Developers is Tough Here in Los Angeles and even people willing to pay have a hard time finding WebDevelopment in Los Angeles.
Are you a non-technical startup founder who’s about to go have a conversation with a Chief Technical Officer (CTO) or Technical advisory type person? Maybe you are going for a reality check on your current situation - wondering if you have a Weak Development Team or a Startup FounderDeveloper Gap.
Part of the discussion around this is the talk about the founder who only got $83M (as compared to $3xxM for the other founders) who bailed out early and choose to go back to school. ► February (2) CTO Founders / Cofounders Part-Time Startup CTO? The poor guy. What a bad $200M decision.
Now think about that when you decide that you know better or more than your webdeveloper. If you made the right choice in hiring the developer, then listen to what he or she tells you. Never hire a developer who doesn’t want to talk to you first.

In between, I got an email from CJ Cenizal asking about this exact issue: I'm growing a social gaming startup, Elevated Games ( elevatedgames.com ) as Founder and CEO. I'm currently looking for developers to join the founding team and when I read your post, I felt like I have been going through the exact same thing as your friend.

By Joe Thomas, founder and owner of Left Brain Digital. There’s a lot riding on a website that’s working for a business. One of my recent clients, Marsha Friedman of EMSI Public Relations , understood that so well, she put off developing a badly needed new website for five years.

A month ago a successful Boston entrepreneur who has been incredibly engaged in the Boston startup community was thrown in jail for three days after a CPB agent decided she didn’t have a valid visa (she did have a valid visa, and she was from that extremely dangerous country of Canada.).

I am hearing from my project management team a bit of distrust in the technical capacity of our webdevelopment team. I think we suffer because of the distance and culture but the project management team takes every late delivery or small bug as evidence that the development team may not be capable. You need to dive in.
“Many (merchants) are beginning to see this group buying model as one of the risk-free marketing channels with no upfront costs,” says All Deals Asia founder Yiping Goh ( we also interviewed her in mid 2010 when All Deals Asia first launched). “It was a lot of learning on the job and the results were amazing to see.”
Founders have many things to think about and decisions to make, most of which need to be made on a dime. In addition to that, not all human help must be on site; there are plenty of freelancers and remote services that handle everything from accounting, websitedevelopment, logistics, among other things.
