I used to ask Deborah to book my travel plans in France and Germany were I went 1-2 times / month. There were online tools to book this stuff but the Internet booking sites were early. If there was any society in which being a hustler was out of step with the norm is was England. But I don’t want to pay that much.

I had two goals in mind: I wanted to be even more technical than I already was as a developer (I wanted to work on cutting edge stuff, which back then was the Internet – pre World Wide Web browsers) and I wanted to live & work in Europe. You helped me get staffed in Rome so I didn’t have to work in Erlangen, Germany.

Many people don’t realize that the majority of the monetization of the Internet originated in Los Angeles but was perfected in Silicon Valley. The monetization engine of the Internet that powers the most profitable business perhaps in history was invented and perfected in Los Angeles and is what you now know as Google Ad Words.

As the economy soured and people grew wary of buying Internet software (we were SaaS as early as 1999 – our buyers were certainly “early adopters&# ) and life grew more difficult. The largest Germany construction firms announced that they were going to launch their own initiative and therefore not use 3rd-party vendors.

Today, building Internet businesses, or businesses that are primarily marketed through the Internet, is viable for entrepreneurs all over the world. Gilt Groupe from France and Xing from Germany are good examples. It is no longer Silicon Valley's exclusive domain. We are also seeing significant companies come out of Europe.

My Web Design Company As a part of my masters degree, I did research for two summers in Germany. While in Germany, I decided to start a site advertising website design for $500 per website. I was able to design 2 or 3 websites while in Germany (with one being a more advanced $1,300 website) and was able to eat.
