I lived through the time when working in my first job in Ann Arbor Michigan we had to get out a map to find out that San Jose was not only in Puerto Rico but there was a city with that same name in California. Government and the enterprise are now followers rather than leaders. VCs have now ceded more control to founders.

So plenty of dark bits, but also this weird discovery that you can create incredibly close connections with people that I've never met before and build a global community of people who want nothing more than to help save lives. And for them, a lot of it was this kind of weird anti-government thing. So there was like scary moments.

We set up a bunch of global surveillance systems like one called PREDICT that was supposed to find these diseases early on. We worked with the Chinese government to put U.S. So President Obama set up that office after I departed, put someone named Beth Cameron in charge of that office, a real global health expert.
