Since selling Matt has gone on to become one of the smartest angels I have seen operate. o Early on they hired 3 people from ACT software at once (more team hiring) on staff and supplement it with Agency (in LA worked with First Communications – good). To make PR big you need to find a way to “make news”.

Scott Kupor is the managing partner at Andreessen Horowitz, where he’s responsible for all operational aspects of running the firm. Coming from an operating role in a company, that can feel odd - that doing nothing is in fact accomplishing your objective - so that takes some getting used to.

Actually, I tend to lean more on the relationship building side, for a couple of reasons. It's like making a hire that you can't fire--so having the chance for multiple interviews over a longer period of time is important and to your advantage. Get them to do some homework for you, too--especially around hiring.

I’ll admit that I do know one VC firm who’s strategy is not to call their entrepreneurs and not to be involved in operations. It led to hiring Eric Schmidt. In my mind, the best VCs actually deliver outsized returns by “leaning on the scale” not by “deal sourcing.” Not according to my sources.
