Another example was something I found when reading Lean Analytics. Our old frequentist methods can be computed in microseconds using PHP, while our new Bayesian methods take minutes on a 64 core compute cluster. But by the time I was building my first websites for commercial use , PHP had taken over. Writing unit tests or mock objects in PHP is an exercise in constant frustration.
Full discloure, I am a former PHP, Perl, ColdFusion, ActionScript, VB.NET, ASP.NET and C# developer. You can develop web.apps in assembly language if you insist, but it’ll take 10 times more time and money than doing it with.net, php, ror or other modern languages and you’ll have 10 times more bugs to deal with.
As we move into a new economic climate, its my hope that our industry will stop this expensive kind of learning and start building lean startups instead.
