Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Saturday, September 13, 2008 SEM on five dollars a day How do you build a new product with constant customer feedback while simultaneously staying under the radar? SEM is a simple idea. Trying to answer that question at IMVU led me to discover Google AdWords and the world of search engine marketing.
It is what is commonly referred to as “vanity metrics” as in, “Look at how many more followers I got us! If I sold stuff or drove other major actions (like wanting to increase media page views, video views, etc.) Clicks are also a simple measure that you can get from basic link tracking packages. End of story.

He also has a discussion of how your choice of business model determines which of these metric areas you want to focus on. Choose one.

A common framework for defining your growth model is Dave McClure’s Pirate Metrics for startups : the AARRR framework. For each stage of the funnel, consider the distinct metrics that ladder up to your business’s KPIs. This exercise will lead you to a full picture of the channels you can leverage to increase those metrics.
Business model viability, in the majority of startups, will come down to balancing two variables: Cost to Acquire Customers (CAC) The ability to monetize those customers, or LTV (which stands for Lifetime Value of a Customer) Successful web businesses have long understood these metrics as they have such an easy way to measure them.
I used to think that investments in metrics were a form of waste. Customers dont care if you have good metrics, only if you have a good product. If you figure out how to scale a video product inside of Facebook really, really, quickly they’re likely to allow it to happen for a while so they can study the positive & negative impacts on user experiences.
