One of the things that I thought was another kind of crisis moment, that was kind of a key thing in leadership, was the decision you had to make around [Washington] D.C.
Clearly, those in power in Washington do not believe that market forces will be what re-energizes our economy. These are the metrics that should be on your inflationary dashboard. What they are telling entrepreneurs is this: "You are irrelevant in economic recovery."
Focus on the output metrics of that part of the product, and you make the problem a lot more clear. To promote this metrics discipline, we would present the full funnel to our board (and advisers) at the end of every development cycle. Every board meeting, the metrics of success change. Time-to-complete-a-sale is not a bad metric for validated learning at this stage. The key to making progress as a startup is validated learning about customers; defining the customer both in terms of interests and also metrics. And yet, their investors are frustrated.

Despite all the energy invested in talking to authors about the size of their platform, very few gatekeepers have a rigorous set of metrics for measuring it. The problem is that there are no other metrics they can look at to judge the content of a book to know if it’s worth reviewing. Is that a lot? In that I see opportunity.
