Not continuing to network, even if it’s just within the company. We all know to network when looking for a job. You need to make a conscious effort to keep your name and face in front of your higher-ups. That means attending office parties and greeting your boss (and his boss, and her boss) by name whenever appropriate.

It was the best 5 days of networking I spent last year. We heard first-hand just how close it was that Facebook had considered locating its headquarters in Switzerland and how the Irish rallied and now host more than 400 jobs locally and growing. Getting names of marquee speakers would obviously draw a good crowd from across Europe.

I heard word that a new project was starting in Tokyo to work for the board of directors of a very large and well known Japanese electronics company to work on their Internet strategy looking at media, devices and networks. He told me that he was leading the project globally and gave me the name of the lead Japanese partner.
