Stock options for all employees of startups served several purposes: Because startups didn’t have much cash and couldn’t compete with large companies in salary offers, stock options dangled in front of a potential employee were like offering a lottery ticket in exchange for a lower salary. It’s called Growth capital.
Another thing I noticed was that I was now referring companies that I had invested in at a “pre-seed” (capitalization intentional) stage over to folks who would previously be considered my peer venture funds doing Seed-stage investments. Too Much Capital. There is too much capital coming into tech investing.
With this seedcapital – more often than not totaling between $100,000 and $1,000,000 - the company accomplishes a number of key technical milestones, gets a beta customer or two, and then goes on a "road show" to venture capitalists around the country for capital to “scale” the business.

Not only are they trying to get their inspired endeavor up and running, but they also are struggling to acquire the much-needed capital to actually successfully fund the startup. In the past, securing capital was not unlike fielding an organized racket at the hands of predatory bankers and other similar types of lenders.
Non of this academic stuff. Entrepreneurs always struggle with competing priorities and manage expenses very closely. We are raising seedcapital, but would like to have a US tech investor. My goal is to some day get an honorary degree for kicking ass in business. The same way you find a girlfriend / boyfriend.
One independent expert on the VC industry told me recently that there really is no “venture capital” today, only “continuation capital. You had better have proven revenue, explosive growth, and an exit right around the corner if you want anything more that seedcapital. Translation? was the worst ever.
