But by taking advantage of open source, agile software, and iterative development, lean startups can operate with much less waste. I am heavily indebted to earlier theorists, and highly recommend the books Lean Thinking and Lean SoftwareDevelopment. The lean startup is an application of Lean Thinking. No more, no less.

For those whove heard it, it contains a length discourse on the subject of agile softwaredevelopment and extreme programming, including its weaknesses when applied to startups. I had a background in lean manufacturing (book knowledge, anyway) and lean softwaredevelopment (hands on) before encountering Lean Startups.
Although Catalyst folded with the dot-com crash, Ries continued his entrepreneurial career as a Senior Software Engineer at There.com, leading efforts in agile softwaredevelopment and user-generated content. While an undergraduate at Yale Unviersity, he co-founded Catalyst Recruiting. Take a look and let me know what you think.
We wanted an agile approach that would allow us to build our software architecture as we needed it, without downtime, but also without large amounts of up-front cost. After all, the worst kind of waste in softwaredevelopment is code to support a use case that never materializes. Take a look and let me know what you think.
Even if men have an innate advantage at softwaredevelopment, the gap would have to be massive in order to explain why startup after startup has an all-male team. There was one notable exception: Sweden. There was one notable exception: Sweden. Demographic diversity is an indicator. Demographic diversity is an indicator.
Ever since that time, I have struggled to explain how the feedback loop in customer development should interface with the feedback loop in productdevelopment. What causes projects like this to fail in traditional softwaredevelopment is that the solution is unknown. What do you do if the problem itself is unknown?

If you’ve tried Five Whys, please share your experiences so far.
This builds on a lot of great thinking that has come before, like the agile movements insistence that only the creation of working code counts as progress for a softwaredevelopment team. None of it would have happened if we had plenty of cash, or were content to count our progress by traffic or productdevelopment milestones.
I thought Id share a little bit of that, too: I’ve been interested in different approaches to softwaredevelopment going back to 1987 when – in my first company Feld Technologies – my partner Dave Jilk and I started talking about “semi-custom softwaredevelopment&# (way ahead of its time).
Sometimes, a great hacker has the potential to grow into the CTO of a company, and in those cases all you need is an outside mentor who can work with them to develop those skills. At the end of the day, the productdevelopment team of a startup (large or small) is a service organization. Does this sound familiar?
Lessons Learned by Eric Ries Tuesday, September 2, 2008 On deployment My favorite question to ask a softwaredevelopment team is "how do you do a release." Thoughts on scientific productdevelopment Lo, my 5 subscribers, who are you? You can tell a lot about a company from their deployment flow. How fast do they iterate?
Why do softwaredevelopers think this is acceptable? Part of putting this into action is requiring your team to have a very deep understanding of their customers. June 22, 2009 10:07 AM Khris said. Also SJ's obsession with better taste (positively) contributes to the overall productdevelopment process. There are some good anecdotes about Chief Engineers in the Toyota ProductDevelopment Book. I really enjoyed this article, my first time reading any of your stuff. Will start to pay attention. Great post Eric.

It would be hard to argue against this productdevelopment strategy, in general. If a feature worked, wed keep it.
Its an essential discipline of good softwaredevelopment, especially in startups. Because, unless you are working in an extremely static environment, your productdevelopment team is learning and getting better all the time.
